Sinop () is a city in the Mato Grosso state of Brazil. The city was founded in 1974 and has become one of the most important cities in the state. The city has an estimate population of 115,000 people in 2009.
Today is a city that is a center of reference throughout the Northern Mato Grosso, with regard to health, education, industry, commerce, recreation and other areas.
Its main economic activity is services provision with great emphasis also to the agricultural sector, cultivation of grain and timber industry. Access to the city is done by land, using the highway BR-163 and by air, using Sinop Airport.
Sinop is a planned city, observing modern town planning criteria, with stroke and regular blocks connected by more than 250 miles of streets and avenues. Residential areas are limited by avenues for up to 50 meters wide, with sidewalks up to 7 meters. The streets are 20 meters wide with sidewalks of 5 meters.
There are several schools of primary and secondary school in the county. The city is also known for being a university town; it has many colleges and universities, among them: UNIC / Sinop (University of Cuiabá), Unemat (University of Mato Grosso), UFMT (Universidade Federal University of Mato Grosso), Fasipe, and Facenop.
